I would like to start a business offering to take care of people's pets in their home while they are away. I heard of someone who did that and made quite a bit of money. How would I start my own business doing this? I don't know where to start or what I need to do. Thanks for any help you can give me!I want to start a pet car business taking care of pets while their owners are away...?It's a great idea actually, and I recently looked in to someone coming in to my home to do that while I was in Bermuda last week, but I decided against it, and I will tell you why towards the end of this note.
You must be bonded %26amp; insured to come in to people's homes because most of their assets are within the 4 walls of their house, and if ANY thing goes missing or damaged while the owner is away, it falls back on the pet sitter.
I run a totally different type of company, but my insurance, for a $1M policy runs about $700 year. So right there you have to ask yourself about profit %26amp; loss (losses such as insurance fees paid, cost of gasoline wear %26amp; tear on your car, etc.)
The reason why I didn't hire the lady was because her insurance / bonding agency doesn't permit her to care for people's pets if anyone enters the household [other than her] while the owners are away, and that is very limiting for the owners when they might have a neighbor bringing in the mail / newspaper or adjusting the lights at night. That's the problem I had, but there are hundreds of other scenarios limiting a person's ability to actually do the pet sitting.
You also have to consider your ability to provide all aspects of care for an animal that may become ill/injured during the owners absence and if you have the knowledge %26amp; experience to spot an emergency, provide the transportation and be willing to administer medications %26amp; treatments to a person's pet as a result of any vet visits that you will likely have to cover until the owner can reimburse you upon their return from vacation or whatever... (I have a medical care form for me pet if you want a copy)
I'm pretty sure the tasks involved in doing the pet-sitting aren't hard, especially if you love animals, and it's sad the there are sue-happy people in the world, but those are the cold, hard facts for people looking to supplement their incomes.
EDIT: You may have to check with your county or state regarding a business license. In Arizona, where I live, all of this is available through the office of the "Secretary of State". There is usually a whole section on small, or home-based business requirements. Hopefully that will get you pointed in the right direction.
If all you want to do is service your neighbors, or people within you community, then you may be able to draft a rock-solid "Consumer Disclosure Statement" including the client holding you harmless for loss or damages, but the key is making it so solid that you can't be sued for anything.I want to start a pet car business taking care of pets while their owners are away...?You have chosen, a remunerative business, 'Pet Care Centre'.
