easy to take care of and not too 'boring'. GLWhat types of reptiles would make good pets for children?
i agree with anyone above who advised AGAINST iguanas or monitors! while both can be great, loving pets, neither are your best option for children. especially, if you're limited to a ten gallon tank. my best suggestion would be to upgrade your tank to a slightly larger size (perhaps to 20?) this will open your options and give the animal a much better living area. as for suggested breeds, geckos are great. however, that being said, they can also move very quickly (so your children may need to be supervised anytime the lizard is out of the tank). plus, if your children should accidentally grab the gecko's tail (and the lizard gets scared), he may "drop" his tail, which isn't the best scenario for the animal.
my personal favorite for your situation is the bearded dragon. they look really cool, which kids love. they're very mellow and don't move too fast. What types of reptiles would make good pets for children? You don't mention age range here... Personally (and this is from someone who has had reptiles in the house for as far back as she can remember) reptiles aren't pets for the kids... Nothing I can think of that would be comfortable in a 10 gallon is handleable by a young child without supervision... Iguanas get VERY large and can become highly aggressive, definitely not an animal for a kid... Any snake has the potential to bite, all reptiles (heck, all animals, period) have the potential of carrying salmonella, requiring a good hand-washing after being handled... turtles, while cute and relatively low-maintenance, require a large tank and close to $200 to set up properly (not mentioning the 30+ year life span...) Frogs aren't the best pets to handle due to various toxins on your skin soaking into the frog's skin, etc....
Why don't you make a trip to a local pet store that specializes in reptiles and see what they've got, maybe pick up a book on the care and maintenance of something that catches your eye... better to spend money on a book on how to take care of something than spend money on an animal you have no idea how to take care of... then as you learn what the animal's needs, likes, dislikes, etc., are, you can determine if it would be the right one for you.... (Plus, this self-educational aspect of it will likely make your parents a little more comfortable with the idea of your getting a reptile if they're not comfortable with it already...)What types of reptiles would make good pets for children?
do not get an iguana or a Savannah Monitor! There are so many reasons why Iguanas are not good for adults let alone children- and Savannah Monitors get big and they have a mild bio-toxin in their bite. I would get a bearded dragon- they are the perfect reptile for children. What types of reptiles would make good pets for children?I would get a baby savannah montior. That why you will be able to train it to be very calm. Iguana can be a little sassy. Baby savannah can live in a ten gallon tank for awhile. www.aqualandpetplus.comWhat types of reptiles would make good pets for children?
Well, I'm no reptile expert, but for a child, I would get either a frog or an iguana. They're harmless and you don't need to watch them every second of every day. What types of reptiles would make good pets for children?
Hello,
For a 10 gallon tank you a pretty limited! I would suggest a Leopard Gecko as you can actually handle these geckos.
Enjoy!
maybe a baby red ear slider but as they get older u will need up to a 50 gallon tank
