If I have a register receipt for something I purchased and I tape it to something else, the numbers underneath the piece of tape disappear. What happened? And, is there any way to recover the lost information? Why does scotch tape make information on receipts disappear? This is nothing new.
Register and adding machine tape that use a thermal printing process (not typing impression ribbons) are based on a chemical change in the powder residue on the paper. The chemicals that make up the glue for scotch tape also react with the same residue and effectively reverse the change.
It is extremely unlikely that the print head made a strong enough mechanical impression for you to read again.
Use staples or paperclips next time. Why does scotch tape make information on receipts disappear? My guess is, the adhesive(s) in the tape react with the ink(s) in the printing, either bleaching them or breaking the bonds in some other way.

Perhaps the tape is providing some kind of optical effect. Scotch tape is polarized, but I can't see how that would cause what you're seeing.....errr....I mean not seeing. My guess it's the former. Why does scotch tape make information on receipts disappear? The new receipts have that stupid laser printing that disappears when wet, sunshined on and taped over.
I'm not sure but if you have any portion of the reciept that has date and time on it you may be able to have the store reprint it for you.Why does scotch tape make information on receipts disappear?
