Spaniels are usually good dogs; however, I think Golden Retreivers make the best family pets. They are used a lot as service dogs which says a lot!Would Cavaliese King Charles Spaniels make good family pets? They do...if you are prepared to have a dog which is with you most of the time. I rehomed our cavalier from a family who just didn't have enough time for her; she was being left for hours every day. These dogs were originally bred as companion animals, and they need people around. Also, they aren't just lap-dogs. Our cav walks for miles every day. You do have to be aware of health issues - too many puppy farmers and back-yard breeders are producing puppies with heart and eye problems, among others, so be prepared to ask questions and see the parents. (Good breeders of cavs are probably going to ask 拢500/600, which is not what you see when you look in the free ads papers.) Otherwise you may end up with a lovely pet with a very short lifespan, and huge vet bills too. As far as temperament is concerned, I can't fault our dog. She is gentle, loving and trusting.

I wouldn't have thought a beagle was the best choice for most families. I see too many fat, under-exercised ones round here. They tend to need lots of exercise and plenty of kind, consistent training.

I'd recommend going to a reputable dog rescue and asking what dogs they have - there are so many dogs needing homes, and one of them might be the perfect match for your family.

Good luck.Would Cavaliese King Charles Spaniels make good family pets?
They are lovely family pets---but research a breeder and find a good one.

In the past 10 years or so the number of Cavs registered annually with the akc has gone up by some huge number like 700%---now I can't believe all of the best breeders in the country decided they needed to produce seven times as many puppies this year, so I am guessing that many of these dogs are being bred and born in puppy mills or BYB set ups

What this means to YOU is that in order to get one of these sweet dogs with a healthy body and sound temperment you'll have to research breeders carefully. Buying from a pet store or newspaper ad you could wind up with a pup who is sick, gets sick as he grows up or has a nasty disposition.

I think this is the site to look at for more info: http://www.ckcsc.org/

Good luck!
