I want a pet that is relatively easy to take care of but I want one that would be fine without being around others of their own kind. I would like a rodent of some sort. What animal would best fit this description.Pets that are fine without others of their own kind?Rats need to have company of the same kind so not a good choice.



Mice CAN live on their own however, they do better in pairs.

Males do best living by themselves, however they smell more than females. Their urine has a stronger oder.



Guinea Pigs like to live with others of their kind so out of the question as well.



Hamsters are great kept alone as they can fight with each other.

i think that best thing is the second chance. lacy my oldest was born at a shelter and it was sort of her first chance. she would have been put down at such a young age. then rizzo my other was abused and neglected. Thanks.What are good fish as pets for fish beginners?all fish are supposed to live at leastt 3+ years, they only live for a few months with some people because they dont know how to take care of them. Just do proper research on google about the fish species you want (it will take 20 minutes max) and they will live for many years. whatever you do, do NOT go in the petstore without having a fish in mind and choose a random fish you like and have no idea how to care for it.

now, freshwater is easier to take care of compared to saltwater.

i think something to do with bettas would be a good fit with you.

you could get a 10 gallon tank and a single male betta and 4 female platies. platies come in different colors, so you can choose when you get to the store, but just do some research on platies beforehand. Also if you choose this tank when looking through the betta try to choose the one with the most 'laid back' personality. I know it might sound silly but to figure that out take the betta and put it next to other bettas/the large tanks with different fish in them. The less reaction, the better.

the smaller fish are tetras--i suggest not getting them because i had them with my betta in a 10 gallon and they kept nipping at his fins. The platies are the bigger orange ones.

You could also do a female betta sorority. You can have up to 6 individual female bettas (the females have shorter fins and are typically smaller than the males) in a 10 gallon tank. Again, try to get ones with the most 'laid back' personality. Females can live together unlike males because they are slightly less aggressive and wont fight to the death. However, they WILL have tiny fights. The first week they will establish dominance--each of them will be fighting to be the alpha fish. It will look bad when they are fighting but its natural. They will occasionally nip at eachother to establish dominance but its not too bad. NEVER put less than 4 together. If you put 2 together they will fight eachother, if you put 3 it will be 2 against 1 and then the remaining 2 will kill eachother. It sounds stressful but in the end it is very rewarding to see them interact with eachother. Bettas are very loving fish towards their owners. Some say they have dog like qualities. you could also just go with platies. They are schooling fish so they will usually be together. You can either get around 7-8 females or you can get 2 females and 1 male and have them reproduce. However, they dont stop reproducing so your tank will be overstocked and you will have to get rid of some of them. If you choose to get 7-8 females make SURE they are females. Pet store employees generally have no idea what they are doing, and they may just give you male platies even if you ask for females (If you get only males they will fight constantly..that happened to me. from the day i got them to the day i took them back 2 weeks later they fought all the time except when they were eating. it was stressful to watch) check to make sure they are females after they put them in the bag. females have a rounder fin at the bottom and males have a more pointed fin. here is a picture:

**Keep in mind that with tanks with lots of fish there is a chance they can get disease. You will have to have many different types of medicines on hand in case an outbreak occurs (and it will if you have alot of fish in 1 tank) so you can immediately treat them and they wont die. Fish also might be sick at the petstore, i got platies and they had an extremely contagious and deadly disease called cotton mouth and i had to remove my betta so he wouldnt catch it and as soon as i treated them for that they got a disease called ich and im still treating them for that and my betta is still seperated. Its very stressful, so if you arent ready for that just get a 5 gallon tank with a betta.

If you want something easier to care for, definitely go with fresh water. In any case, I wouldn't recommend trying salt water until you have a few years of experience with freshwater animals.



Which fish are best for beginners really depends on what you find most interesting. The more interested you are in your fish, the more likely you are to do the maintenance to keep them healthy.



Before getting any pet, but especially before getting any aquatic pet, it's best to do as much research as possible. Read some books on keeping freshwater aquaria, and see which fish look interesting. The books will also give you an idea of what's necessary to care for each species of fish. If you have a 10-gallon tank, for example, an Emperor Cichlid (which grows to a length of 40 inches) is not for you. You can also get some ideas by looking at the fish for sale in aquarium shops, and at the displays in a public aquarium.



Some of the groups of fish you might look at are:

Characins (Tetras and their relatives)

Minnow family (barbs, danios, rasboras, shiners, and relatives)

Livebearers

Cichlids (my favorite fish family)

Catfishes

Killifishes

Anabantoids (Gouramis, Bettas, and relatives)



Within each of these groups, there are many different species, with different characteristics and requirements. I've left out some other types of fish, because they either require very large tanks or present other problems in keeping them.



Fish are endlessly fascinating. I've had them for most of my life, and they just get more and more interesting. A salt water tank is very complex, and extremely expensive, comparatively.

The very first thing you should do is go to a book store and/or library and get some beginner's aquarium keeping books. I also recommend a book on Bettas, if you think you might be interested in them. Learn all about properly setting up and cycling the tank, proper maintenance, water testing, etc. When you have learned how to set up and cycle your tank, you can choose what size tank you want. If you want a community tank, you should aim for a medium-size tank, 29-55 gallons. Anything larger might be a bit overwhelming for a novice.

If you want to start small, an excellent starter set-up is a 10 gallon, planned for a Betta and a trio of pygmy Corydora catfish. Corys must be kept in groups of 3 or more, but they are adorable, help keep your tank clean, and Bettas typically ignore them. When you stock your tank, add the Corys first, wait a week or two for the tank to stabilize, then add the Betta. Bettas are territorial, and most don't take kindly to "invaders." If they were there first, he doesn't mind sharing "their" space.

Do not get Goldfish! They get huge, requiring huge tanks, they are extremely messy, and require lots of time and labor-intensive care. Not a good choice for beginners, at all!

Most fish live much longer than people think. The rumors that fish only live a few months come from people who didn't know what they were doing! A properly cared for, healthy Betta should live at least 5 years. I had a Cory that lasted even longer than that!

a betta is a great beginner fish, it was my first fish and is almost 3 and is still very healthy. and you can have a tank as small as half a gallon, or as big as you want. also remember the smaller the fish the more finicky they are and harder to keep, gold fish are also easy to keep, and you can even buy feeder fish as pets. and for a couple of tips if you have a tank 1 gallon or bigger you can get a filter, which makes cleaning a lot easier. and you only need to change the filter cartridge every 2 weeks to a month.

Marine tanks should be left to the experienced, it's much more expensive. Siamese Fighter Fish AKA Bettas are fairly easy to take care of, however they are also the most abused. Most people think they like small containers and such, this is just a myth. They need at least a 2.5 gallon tank with a heater and a sponge filter. They need heaters because they are tropical fish that thrive in temperatures in the lower 80's. Feed them foods made for bettas, they have specail requirements that other tropical fish don't need. A repuitable brand is Hikari Betta-Bio Gold. They only need 2-3 pellets a day, fast one day out of the week. This is good for their digestive tract. Once or twice a week, for variety feed them frozen brine shrimp or bloodworms (they love this stuff).
It really depends on how much you are willing to put into it. I wanted to start with salt but went with fresh instead just to be sure you would really be into the hobby. 6 months later I still enjoyed having my tank and still wanted salt so I switched over.



The fish you get really depends on the size of tank you get. I'd suggest atleast a 20-30 gallon tank so you have something to play with. A 10 gallon tank can only hold 3-4 small fish. In a 30 gallon, you could get a nice little school of tetras. Almost tetras are really easy to care for and look good in a school.What are good fish as pets for fish beginners?

I would recommend getting at least a 20g tank...thats probably the easiest to start with, and would allow you to get the most out of it as a beginner...
Start with fresh water, salt water is much more technical and expensive.



Main thing, don't get suckered into some " Beginner Starter tank". Save up and get a decent tank that's suitable for the fish you choose.



Now that could be a 5gal tank with a betta

20gal tank with a fancy goldfish

75gal tank with an Oscar cichlid...



All take about the same type and amount of care, but obviously some are going to cost more $$ to set up.

Start with freshwater fish. A 20-gallon tank with blue gourami and some mollies. My brother had a black sailfin mollie that lived about 3 years. The gourami were around ages too. Gourami were our first fish. Guppies are also easy to care for but the gourami might go after them. Do lots of research and it will be a fun project. Good luck.
I would get at least a 10 gallon freshwater tank, but try to go a bit larger. I personally love danios. They are very hardy and are really active. So much fun to watch! I grew up with guppies. With those, I would recommend an all male tank or you will end up with a ton of baby guppies (which will get eaten if they aren't separated right away).



You can also do some research and have a few different kinds of fish together. aqadvisor.com is a great resource to see if your fish are compatible and to make sure you do not overstock your tank.

I was just wondering why in so many states it's illegal to keep a Skunk as a pet. I imagine it's due to the overhype of rabies in skunks, but that's just ignorance so I would imagine that these sorts of things would have a better reason than that.

Why are skunks illegal as pets in most states?umm well in my state its not illegal you just have to have a liscence but they are mostly banned because they are exotic animals like the black footed ferrets and they tend to have very sharp teeth and bite when they feel threatenedthey are good pets if you do research on it and learn about them
