Why are skunks illegal as pets in most states?

I was just wondering why in so many states it's illegal to keep a Skunk as a pet. I imagine it's due to the overhype of rabies in skunks, but that's just ignorance so I would imagine that these sorts of things would have a better reason than that.

Anyone know the history? Why are skunks illegal as pets in most states? It started with fur labling laws. That caused the pelt industry to crash, and severely decreased the demand for domestic skunks. Next came a major outbreak of rabies in the 70's. It continued as an epidemic into the 1980's. At that time there were no effective vaccines and wildlife baiting programs had not begun yet. So, many states banned skunks and coons, and as typical with governmental agencies, the laws have stayed on the biiks ever since. A better question is how can a species be banned in its native country, but cherished in other nuclear capable countries. Why are skunks illegal as pets in most states?
I'm pretty sure you can get the scent bag taken out. its not so much of a vet who doesn't know how, but rather one who would be willing to do so. my dad told me that a long time ago, he used to have a skunk as a pet. I've been wanting to get one soo badly, but its illegal in MO.

Why are skunks illegal as pets in most states?umm well in my state its not illegal you just have to have a liscence but they are mostly banned because they are exotic animals like the black footed ferrets and they tend to have very sharp teeth and bite when they feel threatenedthey are good pets if you do research on it and learn about them

Not every animal makes a good pet. Enough said. Why are skunks illegal as pets in most states?I think it's because they smell and if they spray...very unsanitary for humans
