What are good pets for people with allergies?

My dad has allergies and I want to convince him to get me a specific pet. My mom is on board with the idea. I've given up on dogs, and I don't like cats, reptiles, birds, or amphibians. So, I've basically limited it down to small mammals. Thank you! What are good pets for people with allergies?Chinchillas are hypoallergenic and make great pets! Just remember that they do eat hay and that can cause some allergies to act up. They also don't have an odor like other rodents! Keep in mind though that they ARE exotic pets that require special care and their initial setup will cost a pretty penny! You pretty much have to order a cage online since not many stores carry the right type. It has to have plenty of wooden (not plastic or wire!) shelves for jumping and leaping, and no ramps. They just get in the way. http://qualitycage.com/index.php?main_pa鈥?/a> has a lot of great cages! They even have chinchilla start up kits! Either way, I suggest doing lots of research. They're a joy to own though! What are good pets for people with allergies? If you dad is allergic then it's the dander, saliva, and fur that will make them act up. Any mammal at all will do that.

Still if you want to try then I recommend a rat. Just keep it in your room and away from your father. A clean house will help a lot. Rats are very sweet, playful, and curious. They're great to have!

I had one for the longest time and she was such a sweetie, I lost her to a tumor last year though.

P.S. Don't be so quick to cross out reptiles, do some real research and you may find they're pretty cool. What are good pets for people with allergies?Just realize that if your dad is allergic to cats and dogs, there is a chance that we will also be allergic to small mammals. What sets off allergies is the dander from the animal's skin. Small mammals have dander as well.

But.. Do you have any requirements as far as picking a small pet goes?

Out of all the small pets I've owned (guinea pigs, ferrets, rats) rats have been, by far, my favorite. They were all great pets, but I currently own 4 rats.. And can't imagine life without the little critters.

They are intelligent, affectionate, sweet, and typically will bond to their owners much like dogs do. They can even learn their names, how to use a litter pan, and can be taught several tricks.

However, they do need to be kept in same sex pairs, since they are social animals. And because of this and due to a higher activity level, they do need larger cages. I keep my males in an old ferret cage. You don't necessarily have to purchase a ferret cage specifically.. But a larger cage with levels and height should definitely be considered.

They also need a good diet. A good diet can NOT be achieved through feeding them store bought rat foods.. Which do not meet dietary needs whatsoever, and are quite fatty and unhealthy...

Heres some websites to get you started on your research, if you're interested..

Be sure to do research on ANY animal you might consider.

Well, you've pretty much already eliminated the allergy friendly pets. If you're limited to mammals those are the most likely to trigger allergies so you're pretty much screwed. Get a pet rock.
