Why are there still idiots who get pets from pet stores?

What the heck!? I keep hearing all my friends going to these pet stores and paying 600 dollars for puppies that came from puppy mills! It is so sick and they even know yet they still get them, also for adults. Why can't people go to reputable breeders or shelters??Why are there still idiots who get pets from pet stores?I fully agree with the author of this question. Yes, all babies are cute and every heart of every pet lover how stood foot in that place is bleeding for them.......BUT REMEMBER THIS......Every pet you will help by buying it from that place - you will hurt hundreds others at the same time. More pets would be bought from pet stores - MUCH more would be bred in horrible unhealthy environments of puppy/pet mills!!!!!!!

Adopting form a shelter is good but if you want a pure bred do your homework and go to a responsible breeder who truly cares about the breed and can help educate you further on the breed.

The puppy mills that supply dogs to the pet stores are only in it for the money. They never do health checks or pedigree research to see if the cross they are making is going to better the breed. Most of these puppy mill bred dogs end up in the shelter or parents of mixed breeds. Back yard breeders are either small versions of puppy mills or just don't know better.

Ask tons of questions and if the breeder resents this then move on, if in return they ask you lots of questions you are headed the right direction. Why are there still idiots who get pets from pet stores?
Well the puppies in the petshop need a home too and if they do not get a home they are handed over to animal shelters or euthenised so it is really a no win situation. Why are there still idiots who get pets from pet stores? Some people don't know how awful puppy farms are, so they buy out of impulse and ignorance. I am sure if they saw pictures and videos of the conditions these dogs are living in they would quickly change their minds...Why are there still idiots who get pets from pet stores?
yeah some things like lizards, hamsters, mice you can get from the pet store. but about puppies, yeah i agree because ,well, people buy the puppies and all the other equipment from the same store. Its pretty annoying for some people but myself, i dont mind.

Some people genuinely don't know about the problems of buying pet store animals - such as mill breeders, overpopulation etc.

Some people have heard about the issues but don't fully understand them. For example, they know that the animals are from mills, and that they are in poor conditions in the store, but they buy them to "rescue" them. They don't realise that they are contributing to the problem, that the only way to end the cycle of abuse is to stop funding it. Buying an animal from a pet store is NOT rescuing.

Some people know but just don't care. It is horrible, unethical, but sadly true in many cases. For some people it is the price, or the conveniance, but some just don't care at all.

I just want to add that it isn't just puppies either - it is ALL live animals. All pet store animals come from mill breeders, or other unethical, irreputable sources (eg BYBs), including rodents, birds etc.Why are there still idiots who get pets from pet stores?
I don't know either, but I think it is out of ignorance. Many people just don't know the situation that exists behind the scenes at puppy mills and pet stores.

My wife and I were glad to see that the puppy/kitten store in a local shopping mall is no longer in business. We have always gone to local shelters or checked the websites and local papers for cats and dogs that need homes. Why are there still idiots who get pets from pet stores?
They may know but not fully understand. Next time if they are interested in a particular breed of dog, maybe you could let them know of certain breeders and shelters that may have those dogs.

Make sure they are fully aware that by buying from pet stores they may be buying a poor quality dog (genetic health problems and temperament) and are supporting irresponsible breeding (not every pet store puppy come from a puppy mill, but wherever they come from it's still irresponsible breeding).
