How come gerbils are illegal to own as pets in the state of California?

It has to do with the fact that people release their pets into the wild sometimes. And the environment in California is hospitable to gerbils. The fear is that they will breed in the wild, and feral gerbil colonies will either spread disease to populations of native animals, or consume their resources, threatening them. Most of California's exotic animal bans that aren't for public safety reasons are meant to protect native plant and/or animal populations.

Add: There are already numerous feral colonies of rabbits and mice in the wild in the state. No use protecting the environment against something that's already been unleashed prior to the laws being put in place... The theory is to prevent further damage from being done by still other species. And a lot of the criteria they use to determine what is legal has to do with the specific species of plants and animals they feel would be affected by those specific animals, and whether they are already threatened population-wise.How come gerbils are illegal to own as pets in the state of California?Environmentalist headcases try to regulate the types of pets people may have to prevent the possibility of animals creating feral populations, and environmentalist headcases pretty much run the state of California.
